Science Fair Season is here …

TulipsWell, it is that time again – kids come home clutching their science fair sheet with instructions and deadlines!

Whilst many fear this time of year, I suggest you welcome it with open arms. It is a wonderful opportunity to work with your kid (niece, nephew, granddaughter, grandson, …) on a project, see how they think and feel their excitement of discovery.

In past years, as a family we work on some really fun projects:

  • What is the ideal water to air ratio for a water rocket to reach maximum height?
  • What is the optimal geometry for kindling when starting a fire?
  • What colored tulips grow the fastest and/or last the longest? (answer shown in photo¬†above)

This year my daughter has decided to explore the effect different liquid propellants have when firing “water” rockets. Liquid contenders include:

  • Whipped cream
  • Sugar water (to add mass)
  • Vegetable oil
  • Orange juice

Which one do you think will send the rocket up the highest?

Have fun!
