Whilst many fear this time of year, I suggest you welcome it with open arms. It is a wonderful opportunity to work with your kid (niece, nephew, granddaughter, grandson, …) on a project, see how they think and feel their excitement of discovery.
In past years, as a family we work on some really fun projects:
- What is the ideal water to air ratio for a water rocket to reach maximum height?
- What is the optimal geometry for kindling when starting a fire?
- What colored tulips grow the fastest and/or last the longest? (answer shown in photo above)
This year my daughter has decided to explore the effect different liquid propellants have when firing “water” rockets. Liquid contenders include:
- Whipped cream
- Sugar water (to add mass)
- Vegetable oil
- Orange juice
Which one do you think will send the rocket up the highest?
