Our Results (Longitudinal)

Program Background

We Teach Science is an organization that connects public middle school students with science, technology, engineering, and math professionals for Remote Tutoring and Mentoring sessions (RTM). The goal of the RTM program is to help students identified as being at risk of failing Algebra I to succeed through increased exposure to algebra and individual-level attention. RTM is highly flexible in that it allows students and their mentors to connect from separate locations through the use of technology; both audio connections and an interactive whiteboard allow real-time virtual communication and shared exploration of mathematical concepts.

While the impressive annual impact of the program on our students has been established since its inception in 2009, this year we have had the opportunity to examine the long-term impact of the program on our students in subsequent years. This longitudinal study focuses on students who participated in the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years.


Measured Success

Our results indicated that the RTM program continues to have a positive and significant impact on alumni academic performance in the year following the program.  A few highlights:
  • Students from the 2011-2012 school year who retook Algebra I in 9th grade outperformed their peers in math by 5.4%.  This lift is similar to the growth students experience while participating in the program.
  • Students who participated in the 2010-211 school year program (which took place after school) outperformed their peers by 9.7% when they retook Algebra I in 9th grade.
  • Students in both program years also improved in science – for instance, students from the 2011-2012 school year program experienced a 5.9% growth in science as compared to their peers.
